Differences between Wet Cast & Dry Cast pavers

Find what differences lie between the two major types of pavers

Pavers are everywhere!

If you are looking to pave your driveway and you’re not educated enough about Pavers, then you’re making a wrong purchase.

We try to help you understand the two main types of concrete pavers: Wet cast pavers and Dry cast pavers.

The main difference lies in the manufacturing process.

Wet Cast Pavers

Wet cast concrete is a flow-able form of concrete which is often poured down on moulds from a hopper or truck.

  • It has a higher water to cement ratio.
  • The manufacturing involves pouring out concrete mix to a mould which will be vibrated to push any air bubbles out from the mix.
  • Smoother finishes on the surface can be achieved through this process.
  • The concrete mix sets faster in this process.
  • Simpler Machinery is used.
  • Most of the bright coloured pavers(Red, yellow and Jet black) you see would be made using wet casting process.
  • However, the resultant pavers will have lesser strength.
  • Wet cast pavers also tend to be more expensive than dry cast pavers.
  • Suitable for residential projects and not the best option for highways due to its strength factor.

Dry Cast Pavers

Dry cast pavers are essentially made of dry sand, cement and other materials which are transferred to paving moulds where they are hydraulically pressed and pulsed.

  • They are almost dry with low water to cement ratio and zero slump
  • Shiny finishes cannot be replicated on the surface.
  • Concrete mix takes a longer period to set.
  • Heavy and complex machinery is used to manufacture dry cast pavers.
  • Dry Casting process is used to manufacture man holes, concrete pipes and various other high strength products.
  • The resultant pavers have high strength and have very high load capacity, making it suitable for highways, roads and factory premises.
  • They are an economical alternative.
  • Though they can be made available in several colours, for budget projects, shades of grey are used.
